Retraction in consumption makes bakery market review projection for 2014

SAO PAULO-the Brazilian industry of bakery and confectionary revised its growth projections for 2014, after registering a decline of sales in the first half of the year, according to the Sampapão-acronym used to aggregate the syndicate and the Industrial Association of bakery and Confectionery of São Paulo and the Institute of development of bakery and patisserie de São Paulo. The expectation of record high of 8.7 percent this year, the same rate recorded in 2013 by the Associação Brasileira da Indústria bakery and Confectionery (Abip), fell to 5%, says the President of Sampapão, Antero José Pereira. Last year, this segment made $ 76,405 billion, according to the Abip.
"All sectors are being impacted by the economic slowdown observed in consumption. At the time of the World Cup, sales were well affected. So, we reviewed the projections for the year, "says Antero José Pereira, in an interview with DCI. For the Executive, however, the fall should not affect the national industry of equipment for bakeries, nor the suppliers of raw materials, as in the case of wheat, because the need of bakeries to invest in production space must maintain sales.
"In the bakery sector, most industrial parks still follow obsolete, which highlights the need for investments of entrepreneurs at the place of production", explains Pereira. "Manufacturers of machinery and equipment, therefore, follow selling on strong demand", he adds.
Another great business opportunity for producers of machines, according to Pereira, is in the marketing of devices geared for cold chains, used to store for a longer period of time the food produced for bakeries and confectioneries, as in the case of the loaves.
"One of the greatest challenges of the bakery sector in the coming years is the use of your cold chain, still undeveloped," said Pereira. "This is already a trend in the sector and must gain ever more space between the bakery business, which generates another great business opportunity for the equipment industry", says the Executive.
Since the raw material suppliers may raise sales with the marketing of mixtures for the production of specialty breads, like those gluten free, light or with various types of grains, such as flaxseed. "The bakeries already have a good portfolio of specialty breads and the demand for this item by consumers also grows. In addition, they have a higher value-added, "he concludes.
