Production of tires registers high of 3.7% from January to August, says Anip

SAO PAULO-the Brazilian production of tires obtained high 3.7% from January to August over the same period last year, to 45.7 million units, reported on Monday the National tyre industry Association (Anip).
However, according to the entity, the level is less than the growth registered in the first half, when production increased 6.7 percent on the same basis of comparison. Still in the accumulated from January to August, imports grew 14.2% as compared to the same period in 2012, reaching 19.2 million units (except for two-wheeled vehicles).
"We are evaluating the federal government measures to increase the competitiveness of manufacturers in the country to give continuity to the investment program which has been effected, without running the risk of investing in idle capacity," he said in a statement the Executive Chairman of Anip, Albert Mayer.
The Executive said that the appreciation of the dollar was not a positive point for the sector. "About 70% of the costs of imported inputs come from industry or quoted in dollars, including basing the prices of the same national raw materials", reinforces Mayer. He highlights that manufacturers of tires installed in the country need to afford the high cost of reverse logistics to meet current legislation. "In the meantime, part of the importers continues creating environmental liabilities," says Mayer.
Total imports of tires (including two and four wheels) grew 7.8 percent in the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2012, totaling 30.2 million units, according to Anip.
Already exports had fallen 11.3 percent on the same basis of comparison, to 8.9 million units. "There was strong growth in imports and the trade balance deficit in late August is more than triple that recorded in the same period last year," says Mayer.
Motorcycles in the first fortnight of September, were emplacadas 57.3 million motorcycles, down 11.4% compared to the previous year, according to the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of motorcycles, Mopeds, Scooters, and Bicycles (Abraciclo). With ten business days, the first two weeks of last month had a daily average of 5.7 thousand units sold, against 6.3 thousand bikes emplacadas daily at same period of 2012, which had one working day less.
