BASF buys polyamides of Solvay global business

On sale for not integrating a focus on specialty chemicals, the world business of polyamides (PA) Belgian Solvay Group was won by 1.6 billion euros for German conglomerate Basf, as communicated to the media released on 19 September. The transaction involves 12 factories, four research centers and 10 technical support, until then governed by Rhodia, controlled by Solvay, and strengthens Basf's global presence in noble polymers, niche where already acts as trainer of opinion in polyamides 6 and 6.6., in particular in the framework injected parts. The announcement to the press, the prediction is that the transaction be formalized and approved by regulatory agencies until the third quarter of 2018. With this purchase, Basf takes the helm of the only engineering plastics plant of Brazil, conducted by Rhodia. Capacity of around 100.00 t/a polymerization of PA 6.6 and 50,000 of PA 6 and 6.6 in activates in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo. The unit operates supplied by polyamide 6.6 intermediates units that remain in the hands of the Solvay: nylon salts plants, resulting from the reaction of adipic acid with hexamethylene amine, planted in Paulínia in São Paulo and in Santo André, in the ABC paulista. The plant in Sao Bernardo that Basf acquired benefits PA 6 imported. In this way, Basf back producing polyamides in Brazil, from which he retired in 2015, after a fire in November 2014 to interrupt the performance of the old unit of polymerization and PA 6 compound that the German group bought the brazilian Mazzaferro. At the time, Basf justified your decision to close the production with insufficient domestic demand. About two years later, according to report published by Plastics in review in June, the unit in Sao Bernardo has exported 70 percent of what it produces, in reaction to the sharp fall of the national consumption of polyamide 6 and 6.6 over three years of recession.
