Culls of chickens and pigs in Brazil reach records in 2016

The slaughter of chickens in Brazil grew 1.1% in 2016 in comparison with the previous year, to 5.86 billion historical heads, with record exports helping to poultry production in year of economic recession that affected domestic consumption, according to data from the IBGE released this Wednesday (15/3).
The Brazil, global exporter of chicken, embarked in 2016 records volumes. Domestic consumption, however, is responsible for the majority of product demand.
On the other hand, the IBGE reported that in the fourth quarter of 2016 were slaughtered 1.41 billion chicken heads, 4% drop compared to the immediately preceding quarter and 6.2% in comparison with the same period in 2015. Already the slaughter of pigs in the country increased by 7.8%, reaching a record 42,320,000 heads, also with momentum in exports, which have risen by 30% in 2016.
In the fourth quarter of 2016, were slaughtered 10,810,000 heads of pigs with high of 0.8% in the previous quarter and 5.8% compared to the previous year. The quarterly result was also the largest since 1997, when it started the historical series of the IBGE.
Cattle slaughter retreated 3.2 percent in 2016, to 29,670,000. This was the third consecutive annual drop, said the IBGE. Beef exports of Brazil retreated 1% last year, according to industry data.
In the fourth quarter of 2016, were slaughtered bovine heads 7,410,000 with high of 1.2 percent in the previous quarter and a fall of 3.7% in comparison with the same quarter of 2015.
