Brazilian honey is almost ready to conquer the world

While the consumption of honey in Brazil is still small, the companies in the sector see exports a way to grow and expand revenues. Last year, the Country recorded strong growth in sales to the international market and climbed six positions in the world rankings, now occupying the 8th place in value. The growth was 82% compared to the previous year and the movement of $ 98,5 million. But after the peak last year, sales in the first months of the year, slowed down – there were 17.4% drop in value and 18.9% in volume.
Even with this reduction, the President of the Brazilian Association of exporters of honey (Abemel), Carlos Pamplona, follow optimistic and classifies it as "natural decay". That's because the two years preceding the record also recorded big fall crop in the Northeast because of drought. In 2014, there was great demand in the international market and an increase in the dollar, which increased exports. "In the last two months the foreign market gave a parade. They bought a lot and gave a standing waiting for the production of the United States, which comes at the end of July, "he says.

Despite the retraction, Pamplona sees great opportunities in the market. "If Brazil get ready, there is a potential of 100 thousand tons in the next five to ten years. Today, Brazil exports 25 thousand tons. If we can absorb this ' hole ', companies can have an increase of revenues of up to $ 400 million, "he says.
