Imports of wine falls in the first half

The Brazil imported less fine wines in the first half of 2013. The fall was 4.1% compared to the same period last year. Vendors such as Chile and Argentina — which together account for more than half (57.65%) of foreign purchases of product or presented mild fall in sales volume to the country — the case of Chile, with -0.2% — or were to stagnate, the example of Argentina, with 0.05% reduction.

The retraction, according to Adam Morellatto, of International Consulting, responsible for the survey, was mainly due to foreign exchange increase. The move benefited the Brazilian wine sector from January to April this year grew 13.2% the sale of wines, sparkling wines, grape juices and derived drinks over the same period last year, reaching 106 million gallons domestically, against 94 million from the previous year, according to the Brazilian Wine Institute (Ibravin).

According to the survey, the more significant indentations of imports came from Italy ( -16%) and Portugal ( -12%) and only just France and Spain showed positive results in sales (4.4% and 0.5%, respectively) in the period. Compared to the previous year, according to consultancy, while over the past four years the imported wine market grew at an average of 13.5% per annum in 2012 as a result of less 1.01%.
According to the consultant, to ensure a good export volume, large suppliers such as Chile, for example, has been maintaining a strategy of offering wines until 23% cheaper than those of Argentina.

"Of 370 million litres of wine consumed per year in the country, 140 million are classified as fine wines, being that, of this total, 110 million gallons are imported, and the remaining 30 million domestically," says Adolar Hermann, Director of Decanter, importer of Blumenau (SC).
