Starbucks adopts Cup protector that reduces logging

Starbucks Coffee Company, the LBP Manufacturing and Henkel have developed along the EarthSleeve, a new hot cup protector that includes patented technology that enables reduced total use of material that represents almost 100000 felled trees less per year, according to the companies involved.
Manufactured in the United States by the LBP, with adhesive solutions from Henkel, the product uses 34% less raw fiber material and 25% more recycled content, without modifying the performance or function, says Starbucks. With almost 3 billion hot cups guards produced in the United States in 2011, Starbucks-owner of nearly half the u.s. market for coffee consumption on the go (moving)-observes that these developments of material will have a substantial impact on the packaging industry.
The traditional cups support is created by three-layer lamination using starch-based adhesives. New multifunctional stickers have insulation characteristics to support cups, allowing a 34% reduction in the use of fibers in relation to conventional media.
The EarthSleeve is currently being introduced in Starbucks in the United States and units in Canada, and its use can be extended to other countries.
"The introduction of EarthSleeve represents an achievement in the formulation of adhesives", says John Meccia, Vice President, Paper Converting Henkel, whose team collaborated in the development of multifunctional adhesives used in the project.
