With cans that fit, Corona eliminates the use of multipacks

The Mexican brewery Corona announced the launch of a pilot project to eliminate plastic for six-pack packaging for cans. The project is part of the brand's commitment to Parley for the Oceans to become a leader in the beer industry in the use of environmentally friendly packaging. Although Corona's main packaging is the glass bottle, the brand has seen an opportunity to help redesign a common plastic source in the Category: Multipack Packs and group rings for cans. The brewery created, along with Mexico City's Leo Burnett agency, a system in which the cans fit each other, eliminating the use of the rings. Named "Fit Pack", the solution groups up to 10 cans, using only the packaging structure, without the need for any additional material. "The mounting system connects at the bottom and top of each can, so several of them can be threaded into each other and create stacks. It is an innovation that can be scaled at a global level, solving the problem of plastics, "explains Federico Russi, CEO of Leo Burnett Mexico City. For now, packaging is not being produced commercially. Only one special batch was made for the action. The package was selected for the final of the Cannes Innovation Lions 2019 in the marketing category. Alongside the action with the dockable cans, Corona evaluates new rings, in which the plastic is replaced by biodegradable vegetable-based fibers combined with an aggregate of by-products and compostable materials (pictured below). Similar action is being adopted by several breweries in the world, such as the Spanish Etrella Damm and the Danish Carlsberg.
