DHL invests in promotional packaging solutions integrated with the supply chain

DHL Supply Chain, the global leader in logistics, warehousing and distribution, is expanding its area of secondary packaging services (also known as co-packing) integrated into the supply chain in Brazil. The goal is to triple the area until 2020. Overall, this area significantly contributes to the revenue of DHL Supply Chain, running about of 180 operations. In Brazil, a DHL already has three customers in the area and is in the process of implementation in two more by the end of 2016. In addition to investing in staff training, commercial and marketing efforts and in developing a specialised it system, DHL will launch in 2017 1 Multiclient Center of Packaging solutions, which will be located in the interior of Sao Paulo.
According to Maurício Almeida, Director of DHL Supply Chain Operation and leader of this project, "we want to unite our knowledge and experience in the management of supply chains and logistics operations with the secondary packaging services, namely, preparation of offers, kitting, sales displays and other formats of packing together finished products, in order to reduce the total logistics cost , improve the quality and speed of operation and, mainly, to leverage the results of customers at the points of sale ". The Director of DHL explains that, in this way, the client can focus on their main activity (core business), a partner who specializes in these types of activities. "In addition, in the future, Multiclient Center the client will have access to economies of scale. Or you can decide by simplify your logistics chain, since this service can also be held within the client-logistics in plant-or even in the DHL distribution center, eliminated a stretch to a third location, usually where the services are performed, "says Maurício Almeida.
With the desaquecida economy, the commercial efforts of the companies have been even more intense, increasing the importance of secondary packaging. DHL performs the Assembly of various formats such as displays, labeling, kitting, assembly and bagging. "This is a common practice in Brazil, but that tends to grow in order to overcome the current downturn in consumption. We want to assist our customers in this strategy, while maintaining or reducing their operating costs. It is important to remember that the promotional packaging represents, on average, about 9% of the total cost of the product. Soon, any reduction or cost increase directly impacts their competitiveness ", he adds.
To serve small and medium-sized enterprises or individual jobs, DHL will launch in 2017 1 specialized center, in which several clients will share space and resources for their packaging processes. "Our project is to have a distribution centre to concentrate operations that, in isolation, would not have enough scale to offset the fixed costs. We want to encourage the creation of kits with different customers and that they share distribution meshes, further reducing the final cost of the operation, "concludes the Director.
