Onion import drops to 8000 tonnes in June

The importation of onions by Brazil had a strong fall in June, not only in relation to may, but also when compared with the same month in 2015. The information was released on Tuesday (19/7) by the national supply company (Conab) in the report, which analyzes Prohort food prices in major supply centers of Brazil.

Entered the Brazilian market 8004 tons of onions from other countries last month. Well below may, when were 33066 and June 2015, when were 35826 tons. It was also the third monthly decline since March, when the import of the product has reached the highest volume of the year: 46360 tons

"The imported product does not have space to remain on the market in this period," says the Conab, amid a backdrop of low wholesale nationwide. According to the company, the onion out of Brazil gets more space during periods of high prices.

The Onion is among the items most significant wholesale drop in June, according to Conab technicians. In the São Paulo metropolitan region, taking as a reference the Ceagesp, the average price was $ 2.56 per kilo R$, fall of 28.58%.

In Rio de Janeiro, the devaluation was 31.4%, with average price R$ 2.09 a pound. The biggest fall, of 50.04%, was registered in Vitória (ES), where a kilo of onions cost, on average, 1.72 R$.

According to the national supply company (Conab), July must be another month of fall of onion in the wholesale market. The vintages of the Northeast and the Midwest should keep the pressure on prices, reducing the space of the imported product in the domestic market.
