Brazil needs to diversify bean consumption, says Ibrafe

The President of the Brazilian Institute of beans and Pulses (Ibrafe), Marcelo Lüders, said that it is necessary to build a policy of diversification of the noa bean consumption country.
According to him, the Brazilian habit of consuming primarily carioca bean leaves the country and very dependent on producers. So, when there''s a problem in the harvest, as occurred today because of the prolonged drought, there is an increase in the price of product.
Between 15 May and 15 June, the price of the beans went up 16.38%, according to the national consumer price Index Broad-15 (IPCA-15). The index serves as a preview for the IPCA, which measures inflation official.
Second Lüders, an understanding within the Chair about the diversification of the types of beans.
"If the consumer was accustomed to having a constant variety of white beans, red, Brindle, cowpea, for example, right now [of price increase of the carioca] would consume more others, that could be imported from China, the United States or Argentina," he said.
According to the President of the Ibrafe, these appears little beans on supermarket shelves for sale and are "gourmetizados".
"The cowpea, for example, was a bean produced by Embrapa, is overrated outside [abroad] and here the marshaler does not give space to put on the shelf does not appear on the market. They say it''s because the Brazilian consumer is accustomed to, that is not true. Is in love with Rio, bean, it will vary. But if you find a bean costing twice as much, thinks it''s a gourmet beans. So we have to desgourmetizar ", defended.
The housewife Legend Maria Coelho, 57 years old, I anticipated the increase in the price of the beans. Her husband is a farmer and felt the impact of the lack of rain in crop, with low production and quality of the beans.
"The beans come out small and shriveled and markets do not accept, they want world-class products," said the Agency Brazil, while shopping in a supermarket.
The price of a kilo of beans-carioca ranges from R$ 7.99 to 12.9 in markets covered by the report. Already the black beans and black-eyed peas are not enough to $ 7 a pound.
Import
The federal Government has authorized the importation of beans from some countries, with the aim of reducing the price of the product.
The rate of import of black beans and be zeroed by carioquinha 90 days. Currently, the bean that enters the country pays 10% fee. However, the product of the MERCOSUR countries is already exempt from import tariff, so, in practice, the measure extended the zero rate for countries outside the economic bloc that produce beans, like China.
"There is no other way to bring minimum encouragement to the consumer not to be taking any hindrance to imports," said the President of the Ibrafe, Marcelo Lüders.
However, he points out that the black beans is that must be imported, so the price of the carioca beans should only fall with the first crop bean harvest 2016/2017, in February and March of next year, if the weather conditions do not interfere with the planting.
The Brazil has three crops of beans, a crop in April; the second until July; and the last, which is irrigated, is with planting being finalized this month to be harvested until October.
"With the entry of the irrigated crop from this month and in July and August, a fall in prices, which must do the reverse movement to the entrance of the 2016/2017, whose planting begins in September," said the Secretary of the agricultural policy Ministry of agriculture, livestock and food supply, Neri Geller.
However, for Marcelo Lüders, this third vintage will be "a drop d ´ water in the desert" which will lessen, but not eliminate the factors that raised the price of the beans. The third crop of beans is of around 1000 tonnes 873.3 2.4% above the third crop of 2014/2015.
The President of the snake Ibrafe compliance with the minimum price of the beans. According to him, about ten years ago the chain does not receive due attention from the Government.
According to him, there are factors that discourage the production of beans, making the producer reduce the planted area to the detriment of other more profitable crops. "In 2013, had beans thrown away, destined to feed. Was so cheap that there''s no way the producer to transport, "he said.
There are more modern pesticides, according to Lüders, that could cheapen the production, but that, because of the bureaucracy, have not yet been released for import in Brazil. The supply policy could also be reviewed, to the President of the Ibrafe, since there is, according to him, carioca bean varieties that could be stored for up to two years without compromising the quality.
The President of the Ibrafe reported that in July there will be the Brazilian Forum of the beans, which will bring together the entire production chain, including producers, marketing researchers and governmental entities.
Dry
According to the ninth survey of vintage 2015/2016, released by the national supply company (Conab), on 9 June, prolonged droughts and high temperatures led to the retreat in the total production of grains, including beans. The estimate of 2.9 million tons of beans this harvest, 6.1% lower than the previous one.
"This occurred by adverse weather conditions in planting and harvesting and also by competition with soybean [it is estimated that the total area of beans fell 3.5 percent compared to the last harvest]. This is one of the smallest harvests of recent years, which added to a '' pass-through '' stock of just over 100 1000 tons, which is only 1/3 of the monthly consumption of the country has significantly reduced the offer, which caused rising prices, "explained the Secretary of the Ministry of agriculture, Neri Geller.
The ticket is the stock left of grain harvest from one year to the next.
According to the Secretary, the Government stock does not reach 500 tons of beans, "non-existent". "Supplementation of black beans offer will be made, then, with imports," said Geller.
Alternatives to table
The President of the Association of Nutrition in the Federal District, Simone Rocha, explained that it is possible to replace the bean by bean-black-carioca, rope or black-eyed peas, which are cheaper.
According to her, the protein base of several varieties of beans is very similar, with the black, for example, having more iron and the black-eyed peas, more carbohydrates.
"But the combination rice and beans form the aminogram [amount of amino acids that make up proteins] perfect, like aminogram. That''s why the Brazilian was considered one of the people who best fed, "he said.
According to Simone, families can create strategies to increase the yield of bean, for example, doing a beans-cinnamon in place of bean broth, or a baião two, that is the mixture of rice and beans. "I just cannot fail to consume," he said.
The dietitian emphasized the importance of avoiding waste. "That pot of beans that is running some days, you can''t play the '' dregs '' out. Can you get a crumbly or enjoy it in a soup, "he explained.
About other types of legumes that have similar nutritional value, she said that the easiest to use is the lens, since it is possible to do in broth.
In the case of chickpeas and peas, for example, the Brazilian consumes less, according to Simone, and therefore you can''t equate the amount of protein from the beans. "We have to see the cost-benefit ratio," he said.
She still alert that is important to the Brazilian recovered the habit of eating beans twice a day, at lunch and at dinner. "On behalf of modern life, people arrive later at home. We see the increasing obesity to get dinner. When you exchange a full meal, which has the full aminogram a sandwich, satiety is much lower, "he explained.
