Fired power plants more than they hired in 2015

The combination between the breaking of the harvest of sugar cane in some States, such as the Northeast and the Paraná, and the need to cut labor costs extended layoffs in the sugar-ethanol sector of Brazil in 2015. The scenario already shows negative too early 2016.
According to the General Register of employed and unemployed (Caged) compiled by the sugar cane industry Union (Unica), the Brazilian mills have reduced in the number of people employed 33,529 on activity in 2015. That means 3% drop on the nearly 1 million workers employed in this sector in the country, according to estimates of the organisation. The percentage is similar to shrinkage in job creation in all sectors of the brazilian economy in 2015-3.74% over the stock of jobs December 2014, according to the Caged.
In 2014, the signings in the sugar-alcohol sector had surpassed in 49,910 layoffs. In 2015, the greater weight of the negative balance of the sector in Brazil came from the South Central (21,291). The Northeast, contributed negatively to 12,238.
In January this year, the balance of the sector was also in the red, with layoffs surpassing the signings in 16,579 posts, before the negative movement of 2,172 January 2015. The Center-South and the Northeast, entry 6,205 10,374.
Parana plants were pretty damaged by excess rains in 2015. In the last quarter of last year came to stay 28 days straight with the machines turned off without being able to harvest sugar cane, according to Miguel Tranin, President of the Association that represents State units, the Alcopar. "It rained in 2015 around 2,600 mm in Paraná, for an average of 1,600 mm," added the Executive.
He noted that the weather was not the only factor pulling down the balance of jobs in the sector. "In 2015, two plants in the State left the activity due to financial difficulties. Even the groups that are in operation also streamline the payroll to reduce costs, "said Tranin.
According to the Caged, in 2015, the layoffs have exceeded the signings in the sugar-ethanol sector of Paraná in 6,342 vacancies. Milling of sugar cane in the State, initially estimated at 43 million tons, has reached 40 million in February, according to Alcopar.
The exemption in the State of Paraná was higher than the registered in the State of São Paulo (5,457 people). According to technical director of Unica, Antonio de Padua Rodrigues, this movement is "normal" for the sugarcane paulista activity, which processes more than half of the country''s cane. He noted that there is still a sugar operation efficiency gain, year to year, reducing the demand for personnel in the entire South-Central. "There are new technologies that increase productivity. Machines that giving tissue 600 tons per day, now do 800 tons ".
The strong drought that hit the Northeast affected the balance of jobs to 2015, but also reflected negatively on de drive. This effect must continue weighing in the statistics until April, according to the President of the Union of the sugar and ethanol industry of Alagoas (AL-Sindaçúcar), Pedro Oliveira also Nogueira. "The production of cane broke 30%. Is going on in January and February an anticipation of the end of the harvest, which typically occur in April, "he explained.
