Domestic demand for industrial chemicals suffers fall between January and may 2015

The demand for industrial chemicals fell 3.1% from January to may 2015, as compared to the same period last year, is what indicates the preliminary survey of the economics and statistics team of Abiquim – the Brazilian chemical industry association. During this period, domestic sales of products manufactured in the country fell 2.1 percent and imports exhibited significant reduction of 16.5%.

On the other hand, from January to may, the production index showed elevation of 3.06%. In addition the depressed base of comparison, the high is explained by the significant increase in exports (+20.6%) in the first five months of the year. This factor, according to Fatima Giovanna, helped keep the level of capacity utilisation stable in 79%. As the segment operates in continuous process, reduce production can result in increased costs. So, the search for alternative markets, though not remunerem properly, Brazilian companies is a natural way to at least keep activity on safe levels of production.

In the comparison of the last 12 months, from June to may 2014 2015, over the 12 months immediately preceding, the production and domestic sales fall of 0.44% and exhibited 3.83%, respectively. The use of the full capacity of the plants was of 80% when it should be between 87% and 90%. "Companies will only plan new investments when this idleness reduce," Fatima Giovanna.
