Retail Sales Grow 0.9% in may

Brazilian retail sales grew by 0.9% in May compared with the same month of 2016, according to the operator''s indicator of Mastercard cards. Already sales in the last three months have shrunk 0.4 percent compared to the same period last year, registering, according to the company, a slightly better result than the previous quarter, when sales declined 2%. Internet sales continued to be highlighted on the display, with growth of 20.7% compared to may 2016. Sectors such as supermarkets, furniture and appliances and clothing also showed superior performance to overall retail sales, according to Mastercard. In the evaluation of the company, mother''s day helped increase sales in May. The week before the celebration, there was growth of 8.2% over the equivalent period last year.
Division by region by region, the South-East, which represented 60% of total sales in the month, was the only one who had above-average performance, of 1.8%. The southern region also showed growth of 0.6%. North, Midwest and northeast regions, on the other hand, had a reduction in sales of 2.3%, 1.6% and 0.4%, respectively. The indicator of Mastercard, called SpendingPulse, reports on retail spending and performance of national consumption. The data is based on sales activity in the Mastercard payments network, coupled with estimates for all other payment forms, including cash and check.
