Global food prices fall in March

Global food prices retreated in March after reaching a maximum of two years in February, with the expectation of a robust harvest of cereals and with stable markets this year, said the FAO (United Nations food and Agriculture Organization) on Thursday (6/4).
For five consecutive years, food prices have fallen due to ample supply, the deceleration of the global economy and the dollar''s strength, but in the first two months of the year the FAO index rose 175.5 points, in February, the highest since the same period in 2015.
In March the FAO index, which measures monthly changes in a basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar, was on average of 171 points, down 2.8 percent compared with the previous month.
All food prices retreated due to good supply and expectation of good harvests, although meat has risen 0.7 percent due to strong demand for bovine and porcine meat in Asia.
