Expectation is that the increase in consumer prices is 1.3%
The new increase was announced yesterday by the Federal Revenue Secretary, Carlos Alberto Barreto, a month after the Government have done a reset on taxation of those same products. High shall enter into force on 1 June. The expectation is that the increase in consumer prices is 1.3%. The high comes on the eve of the World Cup, which begins on June 12.
The economic team counts on an increase in revenue around r $ 1.5 billion from June to December this year with the increase announced yesterday. On the other hand, according to the Secretary, if companies give the readjustment to the consumer, there will be an impact of 0.02% in the CPI-M, that makes up the index IGP-M.
In the case of beer in returnable bottle of 600 ml, the average price on which the tax concerned will make the product go from $ 4.22 to $ 4.34. According to Barreto, this average price is the result of a search in supermarkets, bars and restaurants. On average, according to the Secretary, the increase in prices of cold drinks on the taxation amounted to r $ 0.05 per unit.
Surprise. The Government did not expect to readjust the price of the drinks before the World Cup, but was surprised by the performance below the desired in the collection of taxes last month. Unlike other tax increases, there is the so-called "noventena", the period of 90 days from the publication in the "Official Gazette" and the entry of force of the measure.
Carlos Alberto Barreto admitted that the measure serves to reinforce the fundraiser, but denied that the decision by the increase, at this point, has been adopted to compensate for the rise in spending to bail out the energy distributors. According to him, the measure is "eminently technical", and serves to "restore the balance between taxes and prices, because the lag was pronounced". According to the Secretary, since may 2012 no readjustment in table used as parameter to calculate the taxation, although may 2012 to February 2014 the price of beer has increased 23% and 19.2%, coolant.
Cosmetics. The Secretary of the Treasury has confirmed that the Government should raise taxes on cosmetics and the PIS/Cofins charged on imports as a way to achieve a primary surplus despite higher spending on electricity. However, he claimed that the adjustments in taxation cannot be done all at the same time, hence why yesterday was made the announcement just the readjustment of drinks.
