BRF will reduce in 30% sodium content in 40 Healthy brand products

The BRF, owner of the brands Sadia and Perdigão, announced yesterday the 30% reduction in the sodium content of 40 Healthy products, equivalent to 70% of the volume sold by the brand. Among the products, are seasoned chicken, lasagna ready, ham, sausage, among others. The products are already on the shelves and make an advertising campaign on television to announce the changes.
According to marketing director of Sadia, Cecilia Mondino, the initiative aims to put the BRF in leadership of the movement by reducing sodium consumption. The company is one of the signatories in accordance with Brazilian food industries Association (Abia) around that goal.
The goal of the World Health Organization (who) is the daily consumption is up to 5 grams per day in 2025. In Brazil, this consumption currently is 12 grams, according to Mondino. The high sodium consumption is a problem is associated with cardiovascular problems.
To reduce the use of sodium in Healthy products, the BRF has developed a protein-based ingredient of meat. The development process took about a year. One of the challenges of the company was to make the product more healthy without losing flavor, explained Mondino, at an event in Sao Paulo.
The cost of production of items with less sodium is taller, but BRF will not increase the prices of these products because of this, assured last marketing director, Ligia BRF Gonçalves.
