Tomato and potato prices fell in February, conab says

The greater supply of potatoes and tomatoes have reduced the prices of fruits and vegetables in major Supply Centers (Ceasas) of Brazil. According to the Prohort Newsletter 3 Horticulture Marketing in Ceasas in 2016, published on Tuesday (22), the cooling of rains in the main producing areas during the last month allowed the reduction of values.
In the Holy Spirit, the price of tomatoes has submitted 53% decrease, while the value of the potato fell 39% in Recife. The survey by the national supply company (Conab) contemplated marketing costs wholesale in February 2016.
The excessive rainfall in the period of planting and harvesting of carrots, however, especially in Minas Gerais, Bahia and Goiás, acted to reduce the supply, increasing the values of marketing. In March, the prospect is high maintenance in less expressive levels, since consumer behavior with the replacement of the product may curb the elevation.
The onion was another item with high in some markets wholesalers and low in others, due to the quantity imported for the internal market. In the first half of 2015, were acquired 9.5 1000 tonnes of onions. In the first two months of this year, there were 47.2 entry 1000 tons. The markets that registered with national production fall.
Fruit
In General, the fruits are still showing high prices for Brazilian plants, motivated by the fall in supply as a result of the offseason and the low productivity coupled with increased exports.
The highest high registered were from banana and papaya, because the variety of banana-silver is in the off season and the papaya underwent climate problems in some producing regions. These products also had an impact on exports, which are advantageous to producers.
In the case of bananas, the movement can be reversed later this month, with the entry of production of Northern Minas Gerais and Central-South of Bahia.
Exports also pulled up the Orange prices. Apple and watermelon already showed erratic behavior, with some ceasas registering high on the values. These variations were the result of interference from the local market. The watermelon presented different levels of productivity across regions, having different reflections on product offering.
The survey was conducted in the markets wholesalers, through the Brazilian program of modernization of the Hortigranjeiro Market (Prohort), executed by Conab, and considered most warehouses located in the States of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Ceará and Pernambuco (the latter becomes part of the permanent studies from this month).
For technical problems, the Paraná warehouses failed to consolidate marketing data until the closure of the bulletin.
