Sale of cachaça increases with worse economic expectation, says study

The Brazilian consumes more booze when the expectation with the brazilian economy worsens. That was the conclusion of a study of the PeopleScope disclosed this Wednesday (10) by Ibope DTM, IBOPE Intelligence Unit and the SPC Brazil.
Research has shown that were sold more bottles of the traditional brazilian drink in three retail chains when the national index of consumer Expectations (Inec)-measured by the National Confederation of industry (CNI) – 12.2% was below its historical average, in December last year.
During this period, the study showed that sales of cachaça reached their highest level in the same period in which the index accumulated a fall of 11.8% over the same month of the previous year.
For note, the Director of Ibope DTM compared the result to the "Lipstick Index", which happened in the recession in the United States, at the beginning of the years 2000. "He realized that lipstick sales skyrocketed, because in times of financial uncertainty, instead of consumers buying a luxury item of higher cost that they provide a sense of well being, opted for cheaper products, such as cosmetics," commented.
The analysis of the Ibope DTM also shows that alcohol, along with fruits and vegetables, were the only one of seven categories of products sold in the market, which had increased in the disbursement of Brazilian 2015 comparison with the previous year.
While the amount of purchased items fell 4.6%, the average amount spent on alcoholics rose 1.1% and going to the market to buy them increased 4.4%.
High class was more pessimistic
The index of the Cachaça, as he was baptized by the PeopleScope, divided the brazilian population in macrosegmentos 13 and 42 threads to conclude that the more pessimistic is a social group, the greater the propensity to get together for a drink or go to bars and restaurants.
This trend was most evident among the upper classes, especially in the category "metropolitan elite", composed by households with one of the highest average incomes and small families who reside in apartments located in neighborhoods, says the study.
Another group prone to frequent the bars or go out drinking – and with the second-worst expectation in relation to the economy – is what "live in mansions," segment with the largest amount of readers of Sunday newspapers and higher proportion of households with housemaids.
Among the population known as "legacy", with a high proportion of elderly people living in apartments with one or two residents in neighborhoods of large cities, is the second lowest confidence on economic issues and a greater propensity to get together for a drink or go to bars and restaurants.
