Tomato leads high of food in March

"Villain of inflation" in 2013, the tomatoes came to stand out among the high March. According to the previous inflation this month, the price of tomatoes fell 28.5% more expensive. The national consumer price Index Broad-15 (IPCA-15) was released on Friday morning, 21, by the Brazilian Institute of geography and statistics (IBGE).

According to the IBGE, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, the food and drinks group rose 1.85 percent, followed by the metropolitan regions of São Paulo (1.44%) and Curitiba (1.42 percent). The lower results were registered in Recife (0.17%) and Salvador (0.13 percent).
In addition to tomatoes, many vegetables and fruits appeared among the biggest high in the month. Lettuce, for example, rose more than 16 percent in the period.
Worried about high food, the Government is preparing measures to alleviate inflation. In a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, the Inter-ministerial Council technical Chamber of Public Stocks of food (Ciep) determines the sale of maize stocks to fuel some regions, especially the Northeast, and discuss actions in staple foods, such as beans, affected by the weather in major producing areas of the country.
