Five major brands of cheese own less than 10 percent of the global market

The global market of cheese is growing strongly, driven by emerging countries such as Brazil, where it is expected that the consumption of cheese triple in less than a decade. However, the top five global brands own less than 10 percent of the market.
According to Canadean's Research, the global value of cheese stood at $ 216,3 billion in 2014 and should reach $ 237,2 billion in 2019. However, the global market of cheese is also highly fragmented, with the five main brands-Kraft, Philadelphia, President, Sergeant and for Galbani-holding combined, less than 10% of the market share. "With the increased competition, the main players in the market are building unique strategies, such as new product features and uses, to differentiate themselves from other brands," says Dhara Badiani, an analyst Canadean.
The growing population in countries such as Brazil, China and India, and with increased disposable income, means that consumers spend more on processed foods, including cheese.
"Western Food like pizza, pasta and sandwiches have become more popular in many emerging markets in recent years," said Badiani. At the same time, the rapid growth of shapes of parts (patches) of products and fast food chains in emerging markets are boosting sales of retail and on-trade. "Supermarkets and hypermarkets are the main channel for cheese retailer in emerging markets, as they offer a wide variety of cheeses, including wholesale, private label and specialty products," Badiani argues.
The Canadean report also indicates that the Brazilian market of cheese is one of fastest growing in the world. Although in 2009 the Brazilian average per person consumed 3.4 kg of cheese per capita consumption increased to 5.4 kg in 2014 and is expected to grow to 8.6 kg in 2019.
The Brazil, currently, is already the fifth largest cheese market in terms of volumes in the world, and tends to continue to rise in the world rankings and reaching the third place in 2019. This means that, in less than five years, the volume of the Brazilian market of cheese have the same size as the French market (approximately 1.8 billion kg.).
