Increase of the dollar impacting retail prices should feed

High American currency presented in recent days may bring consequences for the supermarket sector, with readjustment in prices of some products, such as: oils, imported wines, cod, some hygiene and beauty items such as deodorant (those with inputs imported or are manufactured outside the country) and those who are directly related with the wheat – as share of wheat is imported-like the French bread and pasta in General.
"In the face of competition, establishments must provide more competitive prices to consumers, which tends to keep prices at levels stable in case of high dollar temporary," says Rodrigo Mariano, Manager of the Department of Economics and research of APAS (São Paulo supermarket Association). Supermarkets will have to make an effort in negotiating with the industry to not pass this increase, says Mariano.
"The rise in the dollar makes imported products more expensive and pushes prices up. Also makes imports of machinery and equipment, in addition to making the lines of external financing less attractive ". Mariana concludes that in recent years, the demand for imported grew due to the low dollar. "Now, the consumer tends to consume national products".
