Avianca Brasil leaves Global Alliance of Airlines

Star Alliance, a global network with 28 Airlines, reported on Monday (19) that Avianca Brasil will formally leave the group from September 1. The exit takes place, according to Star Alliance, "after several months of pre-bankruptcy state and the suspension of its air Operator Certificate (COA) by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC)". Avianca Brasil has been in judicial recovery since December 2018 and had its activities suspended on May 24. "By joining Star Alliance in 2015, Avianca Brasil promoted important contributions to our proposal with customers in the Brazilian market, and we regret this unfortunate event," said Jeffrey Goh, CEO of Star Alliance. "I want to emphasize that the departure of Avianca Brasil does not affect in any way the participation of Avianca S.A., our valuable member headquartered in Bogotá, Colombia, which continues to contribute significantly to the Alliance in South America." Star Alliance emphasizes that it maintains a significant presence in the Brazilian market, in which it operates since its founding in 1997. Eleven of the Star Alliance member airlines offer direct operations from and to Brazil: Air Canada, Avianca, Air China, Copa Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, South African Airways, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines and United. Together, Star Alliance Airlines operate 588 weekly flights of 11 domestic points in Brazil to 17 Star Alliance hubs, offering connections to 738 international destinations.
