Carlsberg presents beer paper bottles

The Danish brewery Carlsberg announced the creation of the world's first bottle of paper beer, made from wood fibers of sustainable origin, 100% biological and fully recyclable. The brand presented two new research prototypes of its Green Fiber Bottle, which are the first bottles of paper to contain beer. Carlsberg also announced that it has joined other leading global companies that are united in their vision of developing sustainable packaging through paper bottle technology. These developments are a continuation of Carlsberg's sustainable packaging innovation journey and an essential part of its "Together Towards Zero" sustainability program, including its commitment to zero carbon emissions in its Breweries and a 30% reduction in the total carbon footprint of the value chain up to 2030. The two new research prototypes are made of wood fibre of sustainable origin, fully recyclable and have an internal barrier to allow the bottles to contain beer. A prototype uses a thin barrier of recycled PET film and the other a PEF polymer film barrier with 100% biological basis. These prototypes will be used to test barrier technology, as Carlsberg seeks a solution to achieve its greater ambition to reach a 100% biological-based bottle without polymers. "We continue to innovate in all our packaging formats and are pleased with the progress we have made with the Green Fiber Bottle so far," said Myriam Shingleton, vice president of development at Carlsberg Group. "Although we have not yet achieved the final product, the two prototypes are an important step towards achieving our greater ambition that is to bring this innovation to the market. Innovation takes time and we will continue to collaborate with leading experts to overcome the technical challenges that still exist, just as we did with our plastic reducer Snap Pack, "said the executive. Carlsberg started the project to develop a bottle made of wood fibers of sustainable origin, the "Green Fiber Bottle", in 2015, together with ecoXpac innovation specialists, the packaging company BillerudKorsnäs and the researchers of PhD from Danish Technical University, supported by the Innovation Fund Denmark. These combined efforts resulted in the emergence of Paboco, the Paper Bottle Company – a joint venture between BillerudKorsnäs and the Alpla bottle manufacturing specialist. Now Carlsberg will join the Coca-Cola Company, The Absolut Company and L'Oréal in a community of paper bottles – launched last Friday (11/10) by Paboco. The community unites leading global companies and specialists with the vision of promoting sustainable packaging, offering high quality products and reducing environmental impact. Carlsberg's focus on sustainable packaging innovations is not new. In 2018, the Danish brewery launched a series of innovations in packaging, including recycled retractable film, greener label paint and the innovative "Snap Pack", which replaces the plastic casing around its six cans with a solution that pastes the cans.
