Coca-Cola invests R $1.6 billion in waste project

To help collect the equivalent of 100% of packaging that puts on the market until 2030, The Coca-Cola Company presented your new packaging policy. In Brazil, the company will invest R $1.6 billion in five years (2016-2020) in order to attain the goal, with actions on three fronts: design, collection, and partnership.
Currently, Coca-Cola Brazil ensures the correct destination for 51% of packaging produced and intends to reach 66% until 2020. In 2016, this percentage was 36%. The breakthrough occurred in function of the increased participation of returnable packaging, using recycled resin to make new bottles and support more than 200 recycling cooperatives throughout Brazil.
The company is also investing in infrastructure, such as expansion of returnable lines, factory equipment, purchase of containers and consumer engagement, as well as recycling cooperatives. Of the total $1.6 billion planned between R 2016 and 2020, R $1.2 billion represents the investment of 2018 to 2020. Packaging reuse actions are directed toward the objective of doubling, in 2020, the participation of returnable in the portfolio, reaching 30%.
In front of redesign, currently, the plastic bottles are about 20% less weight than those produced for 10 years. Coca-Cola also increased the use of recycled raw material to packaging produced. More than 60% of the composition of new aluminum cans and glass bottles from recycled packaging. Together, represent 31% of the volume of material placed on the market annually. And 35% of PET packaging also are composed of recycled resin. In addition, approximately 20% of the portfolio consists of returnable packaging.
