Crisis and healthy life change the behaviour of consumers in supermarkets, says survey

Inflation in the prices of products is changing the habits of customers of supermarkets in Sao Paulo. To escape the markdowns, consumers are focusing on shopping at the beginning of the month and the trips to the market have decreased. In addition, the concern about health is influencing more in choice of products.
According to a survey of Apas (São Paulo supermarket Association), 52% of customers make a purchase monthly until 10, when most workers receive the wages. In addition, the average annual visits to markets fell from 85 times, in 2014, to 84 times last year.
Prices in supermarkets are rising above the general inflation. In April, the IPS (supermarket price index) calculated by Fipe (Economic Research Institute Foundation), was 0.79 percent, while the CPI-SP (the consumer price index in the city of São Paulo), also of the Fipe, was 0.46%.
The industrial products sold in supermarkets rose 1.22 percent, the items "in natura" had high of 0.89%. Alcoholic beverages increased 2.85%, according to the IPS. Hygiene products rose by 1.19%, while those of cleaning were rearranged in 0.72%.
With rising prices, consumers are increasingly interested in promotions and discounts. Eight out of ten customers in Apas ears pointed promotions as criteria for the purchase of products.

"Another important tip is to search the prices on over a grocery store," says Rodrigo Mariano, economy and research manager of Apas.
Health
Consumers who frequent the supermarkets are migrating to a healthier consumption model. Items with high levels of sugar, like soda, had 5% drop in sales, while the coconut water grew 11%.
Breakfast of families also had change of habit. Second the Apas, the brands of margarine had 1.2% drop in sales. In turn, the butter recorded an increase of 10% in sales.
