Tetra Pak expects to deliver more than 100 million fully renewable packaging in 2016

Tetra Pak announced that it expects to deliver more than 100 million Tetra Rex packaging produced with renewable raw materials until the end of 2016, reflecting strong demand since the launch in January 2015. The package has gained popularity among consumers of Finland, Sweden and Norway, with the brands Valio, Arla Foods, Vermlands Mejeri and TINE.
Bjorn Malm, head of corporate responsibility of TINE-the latest client to use this packaging – believes that business growth in a sustainable way is not only good for the environment, but also improves competitiveness by providing a differentiated product. "Thanks to Tetra Rex renewable source we were able to take a significant step towards our own environmental goals and we are committed to offer all our milk cartons with renewable materials from next year," says Bjorn.
The exceptional environmental performance of packaging was recognized by seven received awards last year, including first place in the category sustainable innovation of "Ethical Corporation Responsible Business Awards".
According to Charles Brand, Executive Vice President of product management and business operations of Tetra Pak, the success of Tetra Rex renewable sources in its first year of release is extremely encouraging. "We are proud to be the first company to deliver a bottle made entirely of materials of vegetable origin. This benefit also promotes the brand of our customers and communication with consumers, in addition to being a significant milestone in the long-term ambition of the Tetra Pak to provide a 100% renewable packaging in our product portfolio, "adds Charles Brand.
Pioneering in Brazil
In 2011, the Tetra Pak Brazil pioneered the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)-made from sugar cane – with the launch of the first StreamCap covers produced with renewable raw materials.
In 2014, the Tetra Pak went on to use the low density polyethylene (LDPE), also produced from sugar cane, in the packing layers. According to Valeria Michel, Director of Tetra Pak '' s environment in Brazil, the company reinforces its commitment to offer environmental innovations to customers. "Our goal is to always add value to the chain through the sustainable development," concludes Valeria.
