Industries withdrew 7 thousand tons of sodium from foods

The Ministry of Health announced yesterday (12/5) the result of an agreement made in 2011 with the Abia (Association of industries of food) for sodium reduction in foods. According to the data, between 2011 and 2014, the decrease reaches 7,652 tons. The goal until 2020 is to be withdrawn 28,562 tons.
According to the Ministry, the highest rates of decrease have been made in (21.1%) rocamboles aerated cake (16.6 percent), mayonnaise (16.23%) cakes ready without filling (15.8%) and cakes ready filled (15 percent). The smallest were the crackers (5.8 percent), creamy cake mixture (5.9 percent), stuffed cookie (6.48 percent), corn chips (9.4%) and sweet biscuit (11.41%) French fries and potato straw had 13.71% reduction.
The survey refers to the second phase of the national plan for the Reduction of sodium in processed foods. In this step, we analyzed biscuits, cakes, mayonnaise and snacks (corn snacks). Arthur Chioro, Minister of health, celebrated the result, but said that we need to decrease consumption in schools. "No use to celebrate the withdrawal of more than 5 thousand tons of sodium if you don't have ability to work in food, in school lunches and in the withdrawal of the salt shaker off the table." According to Deborah Malta, Director of the Ministry, more than half of the elderly population claims to have high blood pressure. "So the sodium reduction is so beneficial."
The President of Abia, Edmund Klotz, stated that the search industry, once the goal is achieved, replace the domestic salt consumption. "The first phase is the removal of sodium and the second, the substitution."
The survey shows that in 2013, 95% of 839 products analyzed, of 69 companies were able to reduce the sodium content of the composition. Those who failed to obtain the expected result were reported by the Ministry.
The next step in the Pact will be in 2016, when they will be evaluated margarine, hamburgers, breaded and sausages. In the first phase, in 2011, the fall was of 1,859 tons. Were addressed instant noodles, bread and bisnaguinha.
