KLABIN ACQUIRES STAKE IN ISRAELI STARTUP MELODEA LTD.

In continuity to your innovation strategy, Klabin announces the acquisition of 12.5% of the Israeli startup Melodea Bio Based Solutions, pioneer in nanocrystalline cellulose extraction technology (CNC), produced 100% from renewable sources. The $ $2.5 million investment strengthens the front of research, development and innovation (P&D + I) of Klabin, which is focused on the construction of bioeconômicas solutions, aimed at the responsible use, efficient and sustainable use of natural resources. The goal of the Klabin's make use of nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) in the creation of papers and packaging even more resistant, 100% recyclable, in addition to enhancing opportunities for new business in forest-based products. "The adoption of the technological basis of Melodea CNC is very high, with potential applications in various sectors. The CNC, in a combination of properties such as high crystallinity, ability to form films and dense structures and high cohesion, is an innovative route for the development of renewable and sustainable barriers in paper and packaging, providing more resistance to penetration of air, water, and oil vapors, among others; is a technology with less environmental impact, "States Francisco Razzolini, Director of technology and Klabin Pulp unit. Working together will allow the Klabin further refine the research and performance of its business lines and innovate in forest-based system, economically viable and environmentally responsible way. This promising partnership strategy is based on the fundamentals of operational efficiency and in Klabin's sustainability policy, and has synergy with the activities of Melodea to meet the global demand for innovative materials that substitute products made of non-renewable basis. "We have a remarkable synergy with the innovation and sustainable development of the Klabin and our technology will help to increase your market leadership with the launch of a new generation of healthy and renewable industrial products, CNC-based ", emphasizes Dr. Shaul Lapidot, Melodea CEO. This is another of Klabin's investment in research, development & innovation. In the last three years, the company contributed R $70 million to complete the integration of research and development fronts of the forest and industrial areas, bringing a broad and unified vision on the topic. In June 2017, the company opened a technology center in Telemaco Borba (PR), which seeks to anticipate trends and create new sustainable technology and applications with laboratories capable of producing a diverse range of forest-based products and perform simulations of factory production lines. The Center seeks to anticipate trends and create new sustainable technology and applications.
