Tomato price falls 75% target and turns of promotions

SÃO PAULO-appointed as the villain of inflation, the price of tomatoes began to lose strength and now turned war target of promotions between the supermarkets. On Wednesday, 17, two major networks sold the tomatoes between R $ 2.48 and $ 2.50 per kilo. Is a fall of about 75% from the price of three weeks ago, when a kilo of tomatoes was worth $ 10. In 12 months up to March, the price of tomatoes rose 122.1%, according to the Brazilian Institute of geography and statistics, which clears the official inflation.
It is true that normally Wednesday is a day of promotions for retailers of fruits and vegetables in most supermarkets. They buy large batches of products to make promotions. But the price drop of tomato was seen in wholesale.
Between March 28, when the exchange rate reached the highest level, and Tuesday, 17, the price of the best quality Italian tomatoes on the market from São Paulo (Ceagesp) fell almost by half, to $ 7.88 to $ 3.75. "The main factor that contributed to the overthrow of prices was the consumer attitude, which reduced purchases and replaced the tomato by industrialized sauce," says economist at Ceagesp, Flávio Godas.
He ponders that the product offering increased by almost 15% in the last three weeks. "Today the market is being fueled by the harvests of Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and southern Minas Gerais", says the Economist. The situation is completely different from that of 20 days ago, when the product was only of Santa Catarina, whose harvest had a break of 50%.
