Supermarket sells expired foods for a few pennies

The supermarket chain co-op, the United Kingdom, began in December 2017, to sell a few products that have taken the validity for only 10 pence (R $0.44). The idea is to reduce food waste. According to the UK authorities, every year the country throws away nearly 7 million tons of food, most still ready for the public. The co-op will sell a wide variety of products until a month after the due date stamped on the packaging, including canned fruit and beans, dry foods, such as pasta and rice, as well as frozen, bakery items and cereals. Meat, fish, dairy and other fresh products are not part of the schema. In an interview with British magazine The Grocer, Roger Grosvenor, the CEO of the co-op, said the new position was appreciated by the customers of the network, especially for the opportunity to save considerable money with monthly purchases. According to him, the various items sold at 10 pence took less than 1 hour to run out during the trial period, a few months ago. "This is a wise move to reduce food waste and keep them fit for consumption in the food chain. When selling edible products, avoiding the waste of more than 50000 items per year, "he says. According to the Health Agency of the United Kingdom, the expiration date of the processed products is more related to the quality of the food than the risk that the consumption after the deadline indicated brings to health. Therefore, the Agency advises other supermarket networks in the country to follow the example of the co-op.
