The cosmetics industry from Amazon invests in biodiversity to grow

The Brazilian Amazon has the biggest biodiversity of the planet and its value is estimated at more than $ 3 trillion by researchers. However, the economic potential of the region back to toiletries, cosmetics and Perfumery with forestry base is still little exploited, primarily by small businesses. To change this picture, the Sebrae created a project unheard of for structuring the industrial segment in the seven States of the North region (Acre, Amazonas, Maranhão, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins).
According to the President of the entity, Luiz Barretto, the articulation, which involves several institutions and companies, aims to transform the small businesses of global importance in the production of inputs and products with higher added value to meet the domestic and foreign markets. According to him, the approval in Congress of the new legal framework biodiversity can facilitate research and commercial use of plants and animals of the biggest Brazilian forest.
"Beauty products, hygiene and cosmetics should earn this year in Brazil around $ 45 billion. This market is touted as a promising business for 2015. The Brazilian and biodiversity are trends on the world market for beauty, hygiene and Perfumery, still little explored in their own country. With this project, the Sebrae is leading the process of dissemination of this knowledge, "says Bacon.
To have a dimension of the economic potential of this biodiversity, suffice it to say that currently the industrial use of raw materials in the region for this segment is concentrated on only 20 plant species, among which stand out the Amazon horse chestnut, andiroba, copaíba, cupuaçu, guaraná, acai, buriti, among others where you extract oils and essences. The survey is part of the doctoral thesis the researcher Francisco Elno, Foundation Center for analysis and research and technological innovation (Fucapi), with headquarters in Manaus.
The entrepreneur Francisco Aguiar, owner of Amazon Green, eight years in the market, confirms that reality. "Today, the oil is extracted Shea butter lip production. Only Acai oil, which still is not exploited commercially, is 440% more profitable. This project will be the salvation of the crop, "he says.
The potential of the region awakens the interest of other countries in the biodiversity of the Amazon. However, the full development of this productive chain in the region coming up in low quality of raw materials extracted from the forest and in the absence of laboratories and equipment to add value to products.
Biodiversity law
Another impediment is the lack of regulation of the law of biodiversity, still in course in Congress, to guide the research of new products and the distribution with the traditional extractive communities of gains made from the sale of products by the beauty industry.
The Brazilian industries 2,446 acting on the market of products of personal hygiene, perfumery and cosmetics, 95% are micro and small enterprises, and only 48 are located in the northern region, the main focus of the activities of Sebrae project.
Founded more than 50 years, the para Chamma from Amazon is one of the small businesses that invest in the potential of the largest tropical forest in the world for the development of their products. According to Fatima's Manager, Sebrae joint Chamma to disseminate knowledge of the potential of the region will bring benefits to workers and for small businesses, which could develop new products.
"Still lack investment in research and the equipment for extraction of oils and essences. At least 30 products could be used, but researchers face in the absence of legal certainty to exploit new raw materials. The potential of the Amazon is vast, immeasurable, and Sebrae plays an important role in the development of this knowledge ", reinforces.
