Coffee | CNC President rejects numbers on expectations

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Coffee Council (CNC), Silas, the wild countered Brazilian speculations regarding the size of harvests of Brazil and reiterated the breakdown that occurs in 2015, when they should be harvested between 40.3 million and 43.25 million sacks of 60 kg, as stated by Fundação Procafé in survey commissioned by the entity.
Brazilian explained that the main cause of reduction in production was the long period of drought, which began in 2014 and lasted until the beginning of February 2015 mostly producer belt, particularly in areas where the Arabica variety is grown. In relation to coffee conilon, he noted that this scenario was more recent, being observed in 2015 cycle, which caused the variety presented the greatest percentage of breaks in relation to the previous season.
According to him, the water stress was generated by rainfall index below the historical average since January 2014 and worsened with the high temperatures recorded in the producer, especially in the months of plant growth, flowering, "fixing" of spring blossoms and grain filling, with a direct impact on production and fruit size, which causes the coffee growers require a greater number of grains to fill a bag of 60 kg.
Silas Brazilian stressed that the drought was more pronounced in the Southeast region, affecting mainly the States of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and São Paulo, the three largest producers of Brazil. For the production of Arabica, this scenario prevented fertilization and other cultural practices, generating fragility to plants, they arrived very stressed and malnourished to pré-florescimento period, resulting in fewer internódios, fall of leaves, twigs and therefore with lower potential production.
Robust-Already in the main regions of cultivation of robusta coffee, as the North of Espírito Santo and the South of Bahia, the climatic conditions have worsened from December 2014 and further worsened in January and part of February this year, with some areas getting up to 50 days without rain. The drought coupled with high temperatures in these locations resulted in dry leaves and lighter grains, according to the President of the CNC, with negative effects on the expected harvest.
CNC President stated that the decline will be more evident in the production of robusta, considering that, after a good result on last year's harvest, the Holy Spirit, largest producer of this variety, suffered greatly with the drought. As a result, the production of the State must present a decrease of 15.6% to 21.9% in volume to be harvested.
