GENERICS MARKET LOSES MOMENTUM in 2012

After more than ten years of robust growth, the Brazilian generic drug industry has lost its pace in 2012.
The segment recorded a high of 17% in the volume of units sold last year before 2011, according to the PróGenéricos (Brazilian Association of generic drugs).
It was the lowest volume growth of generic history since the category has come to the Brazilian market, in 2001. The sector had grown up from 30% in volume in 2010 and 2011, according to PróGenéricos.
The marketing was 679.6 million units in the year and was worth $ 11.1 billion, points to the entity.
"This did not stop the thread of a jump. Generic performance remained above the set of the Brazilian pharmaceutical industry ", says Sharon Salles, President of the entity.
"The market share in units was 26.3% in 2012 compared to 24.9% in 2011. But it is a warning sign, Yes. Lost pace, "he says.
Pressures on production costs, price of raw material, weight of payroll, taxes and discounts from retail applications are responsible for loss of speed, according to Salles.
"Also we recorded fewer expired patents last year. We are studying how the scenario this year, "he says.
