Production of packaging in the country registers low CO2 emission

In the case of the plastic injection process, the world average atmospheric emission is 1.48 kg of carbon dioxide per kg of parts produced. In Brazil, this average drops to 0.46 kg of CO2 per kg of injected pieces. This difference is due in particular to the brazilian energy matrix, based heavily on hydroelectric generation. Abroad, many countries use other far more polluting energy sources, power plants that operate from the burning of coal.
Modern plastic, Jane: polyamides protect foods packed with movies
At a time when consumers around the world value products that harm the environment on a smaller scale, this is great news. It provides important degree of competitiveness to brazilian processing industry interested in increasing their exports, in particular to countries where ecology has influenced consumption patterns more significant.
The information was presented by LCA consulting Brazil (life cycle assessment) during a meeting organised in may by the Brazilian Association of Plastic Flexible packaging industry (Entire). The think tank focuses mainly assist industries and businesses to show environmental and socioeconomic impacts along the production chain. Its main objective is to provide subsidies to help them improve the production processes in the direction of more rational use of resources.
The calculation of the CO2 emissions for the plastic processing industry in Brazil is part of a study initiated by Brazil in 2015, LCA project that has the support of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), an agency of the Ministry of research Science, technology and innovation (MCTI). "Our proposal is to develop a database of environmental performance for the national chain of plastic processing compatible with international libraries," explains Ricardo Dias, technical coordinator of the project.
Davis reports that the plastic industry was selected as the pivot of the study for being one of those who suffer the most with questions when it falls in the assaults on the environment. For him, this is an unfair accusation, because it ignores the many ways in which the plastic collaborates with the reduction of global warming. The increased duration of varied products from the use of plastic packaging is one of the forgotten by detractors.
Some cases singled out by the consultant confirm this finding. He cited the table grape, whose lifetime to be packed by plastic jumps from seven to 70 days. The manga shelf time warp in the markets, from 20 to 40 days. The life of the provolone cheese ranges from 190 to 280 days. In the case of meat, the varied cuts have multiplied their lifetimes with major indexes a given never cited. "While 18.47 kg are emitted of CO2 in the atmosphere per kg weight gain, the production of 1 kg of polypropylene, a raw material widely used for conservation of the product emits just 1.33 kg of CO2.
Other data from the study were released. In all, in Brazil, are consumed 2.1 liters of water and 1.6 kWh of energy per kg of resin transformed, taking into account the operation of machines and cooling systems. Lost 0.05 kg per kg of processed resin due to problems related to the performance and configuration of the processing and peripheral machines and dimensioning of molds.
The numbers achieved so far by the study are the result of the evaluation of 107 machines present in 18 companies. The study included injection moulding machines, extruders and termoformadoras. The research has guaranteed support from CNPq to continue in the coming months. "The sample is still small, we want to assess 50 companies, a number that will allow us to have a representative overview of the sector based on statistical data".
The advice, however, has found it difficult to address the companies. They are not always willing to open their doors to the work to be performed. "We researched some strategic data, but we guarantee total confidentiality contract. Just spent to market the average data of the functioning of the sector ". In addition to collaborating with the project, the surveyed companies gain access to a report with complete analysis of your situation, valuable for allowing the correction of faults.
Polyamides-RadiciPlastics representatives, Italian multinational unit RadiciGroup, presented in the event of the Entire main characteristics of polyamide used to form multilayer films for flexible packaging. The company, with factory in Brazil, produces the polyamides 6, 6.6, and 6.10 6.12 Radilon branded. "The packaging segment is the third segment in sales for us, represented 14% of our revenues in 2016", explains Jane fields, General Director in Brazil.
During the lecture, it was pointed out that the use of polyamides for this application it is very common for the excellent thermal and chemical resistance and mechanical characteristics, flexibility, toughness, barrier against oxygen and preservation of the organoleptic properties of the food. "When we talk about flexible packaging, polyamides have attributes that combined with other materials such as polyethylene and EVOH, provide movies with effective protection against moisture and rust, while ensuring great transparency."
Jane has sales growth expectation for the packaging market in 2017. Last year sales were good. This is a market that didn't have fall and that always pointed growth, regardless of the crisis. This year, as predicted, the scenario is good ". She expects the current political scandal, which involves the JBS, one of the largest consumers of packages in the country, does not cause any negative impact on business.
