Until 2021, country remains the largest importer of fertilizer AL

São Paulo – Brazil will continue to be the main "player" in the market of fertilizers in Latin America at least until 2021, as major importer, although there is a potential for significant expansion to other Nations in the region, said on Tuesday the Director-General of the International Fertilizer Association (IFA), Charlotte Hebebrand.
"The big player remains the Brazil, but the scope is great for growth in other American countries. The Argentina is an important market, but will never have the same size of Brazil, because their lands are richer than the Brazilian, "she explained in the range of 7° Brazilian Congress of fertilizers, in São Paulo.
"Mexico is a country also interesting because the fertilizer consumption there is still too low," he added.
Citing projections of IFA, Hebebrand said the urea consumption in Brazil is expected to jump from 3.5 million tonnes in 2011 to around 8 million tons until 2021 – the entity works with medium-term Outlook.
With respect to the phosphate, the brazilian demand should leave 5 million tons in 2011 to 6 million tonnes in 2021, while potassium tends to grow from 8 million to 10.5 million tons in the same period.
Still, Hebebrand said she hoped that Brazil remains as a major importer of fertilizers – currently the country buys abroad 80% for your needs.
The Director gave no percentage prospects of total imports of fertilizers in the country in the coming years.
The most currently imported component is potassium, with 95% of supply from outside. For nitrogen and phosphate, these percentages are 80% and 55%, respectively.
