Advance research on interactive packaging in Brazil

A technology that will enable communication between the packing and the consumer, "interactive packaging", being searched by Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, in partnership with the American University of Clemson and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
Interactive packing uses specific indicators to signal the contents inserted in it and issue the alert externally. With that, the package will change color and will show to consumers that the product is not fit for consumption. This technology can be used in perishables from various sectors.
In research conducted with poultry, meat and fish, for example, changes in pH are determinants for the color change. According to Patrick Teyssonneyre, global Director of Braskem technology and innovation, the entire value chain of a product can be benefit from the technology. "It will give more security to the consumer about the quality of the product that he brings to the House and, on the other hand, companies will have control of the integrity of your product after manufacture, transport or at the point of sale", reinforces.
Braskem started research on interactive packaging in 2013, completed the proof of concept in 2015 and produced the first prototypes in 2016. Currently have availability to advance the study with the sectors concerned. "The development of interactive packaging for a specific thread needs to be customized, so your arrival to the shelves should take a few more years", explains Teyssonneyre.
How does the interactive packaging
-Chemical Substances with properties of reaction to specific indicators that communicate product damage are added to thermoplastic resin used in packaging
-When the product suffers any kind of prejudice on your integrity, your coloring and modifies signals for consumers
