Supermarket sales fall 6.96% in may

Sales in the supermarket sector actuals presented fall of 6.96% in May compared with April and high of 1.06% compared to may last year.
Year to date there''s been high of 0.61%, in comparison with the same period in 2016, according to the National Sales Index of Brazilian supermarket Association (Abras), researched by the Department of Economics and research entity. In nominal values, the industry showed sales falling to 6.67% over the month of April and, when compared to may 2016, high of 4.72%. Year to date, sales rose 5.15%.
"In the last two months the Caged [General Register of employed and unemployed] registered increase in jobs and inflation also has remained at low levels, factors that influence directly in the accumulated result of industry sales. But we know that the time is still caution, the Brazilian political scene has passed by new turnings, and it also affects on trust and purchase intent of the population, "said the President of Open, João Sanzovo Neto.
In may, the Abrasmercado products basket, composed of 35 wide consumption products, researched by GfK and analyzed by the Department of Economics and research of Open, recorded fall of 0.54%, to move from $470.16 to R R $467.62. In the year to date, fell to 3.21% basket.
According to the survey, the biggest price falls in the month of may were recorded in products such as: tomato (11.26%), cassava flour (8.53%), mozzarella cheese (4.14%) and sugar (4.11%). Already the largest high were the items: onion (7.42%), potatoes (6.90%), laundry detergent (4.82%) and toothpaste (2.88%).
Only the southeastern region surged in price (0.21%). The other recorded fall: North (-1.45%), South (-0.74%), followed by the Northeast (-0.54%) and the Midwest (-0.04%).
