Growing consumption of eggs and meat falls in 2016

Egg consumption increased by around 5%, accompanied by sausages and less noble cuts of meat. And the meat decreased by 1.45% last year. The data are from the IEA (Institute of agricultural economics), Department of agriculture and the State of São Paulo in Brazil. According to the survey, this occurred because of the economic crisis experienced by Brazil in the last two years and the high rates of unemployment, which caused the loss of the purchasing power of the population.
The Director of the IEA, Celso Luis Rodrigues Vegro, stated that, despite the increase of proteins of good quality in food, verified from 2006, this consumption had decreased from 19,120,000 tonnes to 18,850,000 tonnes of beef, pork or chicken between 2015 and 2016. During this period, the ingestion of eggs for the brazilian population jumped from 191 to 201 units per inhabitant per year.
"In previous crises, when there was a constraint on household income or rise in the prices of beef, immediately was the replacement for chicken meat on the menu daily. What it turns in these last two years, contrary to prior periods, was the fall in the marketing of poultry, such as chicken, Turkey and chester ", the Director of the Institute.
