Coffee consumption grows despite high price

The high prices of coffee beans in the Brazilian market-passed to partially industry retail roaster-did not prevent the increase in demand for the drink in the country. In the 12 months ended last October, consumption climbed 3.4%, which indicates a domestic demand of 21,200,000 bags of coffee beans in the period. In the same range a year earlier, the consumption was of 20,500,000 sacks. The numbers are from research conducted by Euromonitor for the Abic (Brazilian coffee industry Association).
The main explanation for the spread of despite the high consumption of raw material prices-an unprecedented case of species conilon-is that the coffee is, in General, a cheap drink, says Nathan Herszkowicz, Executive Director of Abic. "This helped sustain consumption," says. But the growth of demand for higher-quality coffees, particularly among younger consumers, also contributed to the advance, he said.
The economic crisis in Brazil itself is one of the reasons for the increase in domestic demand, since it stimulated the consumption of coffee inside the home at the same time there is evidence of reduced consumption of booze out of the House. Euromonitor''s research was done with 450 coffee producers in the country, associated with the Abic.
