Canadian company creates biodegradable coffee capsule

With the explosion of brands that use coffee in capsules – especially after that Nespresso''s patents fell – and the growing controversy regarding the recycling of these containers, made in plastic or aluminum, the Canadian company Club Coffee has developed a sustainable alternative: biodegradable capsules.
The PurPod100 base is coffee residue. The shells dropped in the process of roasting of the grains form a bioplastic, which is used in manufacturing.
The capsule is divided into three parts, made of paper and other compostable materials, printed with ink purpod1orgânica; ring, made of resins from renewable sources and wastes (bioplastic); and the mesh, which stores the powder, produced also with coffee grounds and other compostable substances.
The packaging was developed in partnership with researchers at the University of Guelph, in Canada, and is certified by organizations of Canada and the United States. The company guarantees to be the only one to offer fully biodegradable capsules in the world.
According to the manufacturer, the PurPod100 decompose in nature up to 84 days and can be used in composting after consumption, because it contains beneficial nutrients to plants (their own coffee grounds is used as a natural fertilizer).
