Trade and sales of cars retreat

Trade sales in the city of São Paulo and of vehicles in the country are dropping this month. This reinforces the hypothesis raised by economists that the amazing performance of retailing in July, determined by the Brazilian Institute of geography and statistics (IBGE), should not be maintained in the following months.
Between days 1 and 15 September, the queries for spot and forward sales have fallen, on average, 4.1% in comparison with the same period in 2012, according to a survey done by the São Paulo commercial Association (ACSP), based on a sample of customer data da Boa Vista services, which administers the Central Credit Protection Service. In relation to the first half of August, sales declined by about 15%.
Sales of autos and light commercial also fell. In the first fortnight of September, 136.1 thousand units were sold, according to data from Automotive Carcon, based on survey in the national registry of motor vehicles. This result represents a setback of 3.27% as compared to the same period August when 140.7 million vehicles were sold.
Julian Semple, Director of Carcon, calculates that September is over about 300 thousand cars and light commercial got their plates. If the estimate come true, September will have a fall of 4% in plates issued on Aug. Already in relation to September 2012, the prospect is a high of 8%.
"In June, July and August of 2012 there was strong anticipation of purchases by customers, faced with the possible end of the IPI reduction," says Semple. In its assessment, 2.644 million light vehicles were got their plates between January and September, which represents 0.8% drop on the same period in 2012.
"Consumers are with one foot behind in relation to new purchases of items of greater value," says the Chief Economist of the trade association, Emilio Alfieri, remembering that the Brazilian's confidence has stabilized, but the level is still low.
DEBTS
The Economist notes that the priority right now is to pay off consumer debts in arrears rather than go shopping. A given trade association research that points to that direction is that the volume of overdue debts renegotiated grew 8% in the first half of this month compared to the previous year. The new record also delinquent fell 4.4% in the same period.
Rogerio Amato, President of the Association, says that the increase of the renegotiations have relationship with early campaigns and with the receipt of the first installment of the 13th salary of retirees, in addition to collective of important categories.
REPEAT
According to research of the Brazilian Association of Shopping centres (Abrasce) with about 60 businesses, industry revenues grew up 10.35 percent in July as compared to the same period in 2012 and it was the best month this year to the malls. "I don't believe that this performance was repeated in August and this month," said the President of the entity, Luiz Fernando Veiga.
He recalls that the consumer is suspicious in relation to maintenance of income and employment and that affects the intent of shopping. "The environment is weird", says the Executive.
Earlier this year, the projected revenues that Abrasce sectors would grow 12 percent this year compared to 2012. Now, Veiga says that you'll be satisfied if zoom in 10% sales this year. From January to July, the increase stood at 8.6% in revenue.
