SUPERMARKET SALES GROW 4.94%

Actual sales of the supermarket sector accumulate high of 4.94% from January to September, according to the National Sales Index that was released on Tuesday (29) by the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets-OPEN, in press conference for the press.
Also according to the index, industry sales in September showed a fall of -5.12% in comparison with the previous month and high of 4.81% in relation to same month of 2012. These indexes have been deflated by the IPCA of IBGE.
In nominal values, the industry showed sales fall of -4.79% in comparison with the previous month and when compared to September 2012, high of 10.94%. Year to date, nominal sales rose 11.62%.
"Despite expectations shy for the Brazilian GDP, the supermarket sector continues with positive numbers, which shows that our market is still warm. The maintenance of the low unemployment levels and continuous, increasing mass of wage income, as compared to the same period last year to explain the performance of the industry, "says the Vice President of OPEN, Tojo Mathew.
Abrasmercado: basket of products presents fall of -0.92%
In September, the Abrasmercado-35 basket wide consumption products, researched by GfK and analyzed by the Department of Economics and research of OPEN-presented fall of -0.92% compared to August of this year, from r $ 355,85 to R $ 352,57. In comparison with September 2012, Abrasmercado surged to 6.88%.
The products with the highest high in September, compared to August were: full milk powder (3.77%), flour (3.41%), frozen chicken (2.28%) and mozzarella cheese (2.08%). The largest falls were driven by potato ( -21.64%), onions ( -12.43%), tomatoes ( -11.94%) and beans ( -7.60%).
In September, in comparison with the previous month, the basket from the Midwest was the one that presented the biggest fall registering -2.73%, with value of R $ 317,26. The biggest high was recorded for the basket of the Southeast with 0.75%, with value of R $ 336,75.

According to the National Index Volume, researched by Nielsen for the OPEN, the Brazilian fell of self-service -1% in sales volume in the fourth quarter of this year (January to August), compared to the same period in 2012.
Liquor basket points as primarily responsible for the fall in consumption in the period ( -3.9%), followed by the basket of non-alcoholic beverages ( -2%), perishables ( -1.4%) and sweet grocery ( -1.3%). Already the biggest high in sales volume were recorded by the other baskets, containing mainly products of Bazaar (2.8%) and homemade cleaning (2.5%).
In the fourth quarter of 2013, small supermarkets, with 1 to 4 check-outs, were the ones who presented a higher growth (0.9%). The already large companies with 20 or more checkouts led the largest falls ( -2.6%) followed by 10 to 19 supermarkets checkouts ( -1.8%).
The products presented a higher growth in volume sold in the fourth quarter of 2013 were: food for cats (19.3%), dye and hair Rejuvenator (10.9%), fermented milk (10.7%), fruit juice ready for consumption (9.9%), mineral water (8.2%), SOAP and detergent for garments (7.7%). The largest falls were recorded by the following products: soy-based drink ( -18.5%), sugar ( -10.6%), flour ( -10.5%), bar SOAP ( -9%), frozen meat ( -7.1%), margarine ( -4.9%), toothpaste ( -4.8%).
