Diageo launches 100% plastic-free bottle

Diageo, owner of the Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Ypióca and Tanqueray brands, launches a 100% plastic-free bottle made of paper.
The packaging will hit the market in early 2021, but this is still being defined between Diageo and those responsible for Johnnie Walker, who will debut the format.
The new bottle is the result of a new partnership between the company and Pilot Lite, a venture management company, to launch Pulpex Limited, a sustainable packaging technology company.
"We are proud to have created this unprecedented packaging. We constantly seek to overcome ourselves, and this sustainable packaging has the potential to be a great milestone. There's a lot of sense in debuting it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has always paved the way for innovation in its 200 years of life," said Ewan Andrew, Diageo's global director of sustainability, in a statement.
To meet food safety standards, the bottle is made with sustainable cellulose and will be fully recyclable in standard waste streams. Pulpex Limited's technology allows you to produce a variety of single-mold, plastic-free bottles that can be used in a variety of consumer goods. Diageo's initiative is part of its commitment to goal 12 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: 'Responsible Consumption and Production'.
To ensure that the technology can be used in various areas of life, Pulpex Limited has established a consortium with the world's leading FAST MOVING Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies in non-competing categories, which includes Unilever and PepsiCo.
Other partners are expected to be announced by the end of the year and that already consolidated partners will launch their own paper bottles, based on Pulpex Limited's design and technology, in 2021.
