Pantanal suffers the largest amount of fires since 1998

The Pantanal of Mato Grosso recorded more than 3,400 outbreaks of forest fires from January to Tuesday (21/7), the largest number ever mapped by INPE for the period since 1998, when monitoring began to be carried out.
In O'O Globo, Renato Grandelle reports that a group of NGOs from Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay is mobilizing to pressure the authorities of these countries to fight fire.
According to G1, the number of fire outbreaks recorded in the last six months already exceeds the total recorded in the biome in the whole of 2018. The city of Corumbá, on the border with Bolivia, is the record holder in fires in Brazil and already suffers from the effects of smoke in its urban area.
According to experts, the fire is part of the natural dynamics of the Pantanal, especially in dry seasons like the one it lives today – and should extend at least until October, according to the Geological Service of Brazil. However, the high volume recorded in recent weeks points to exogenous factors, such as the criminal realization of fires for deforestation and "cleaning" of pastures.
