Cases of covid-19 in São Paulo should expand by 2021, says Butantan

Although the number of people infected by covid-19 and deaths from the disease have practically stabilized in the state of São Paulo, the pandemic of the new coronavirus is expected to continue at an expanding rate in the state until at least the beginning of 2021.
According to the director general of the Butantan Institute, Dimas Covas, maintained the current isolation in the state, which is between 45% to 50%, the rate of contagion (Rt) should actually stabilize, or reach the value "one", between September and November 2020, which will cause the curve of confirmed cases and deaths to start a "descent" only in 2021. The "one" contagion rate means that 100 infected people are transmitting the disease to another 100 people.
"We're going to keep this epidemic going for quite a while yet. [We will also] probably maintain the mortality rate, although it may even be stabilized at a high level. We are having around 300, a little more than 300 deaths per day in the state of São Paulo, which corresponds to a Boeing 747. We are having the explosion of a Boeing 747 per day and it may still last until next year," he said.
During a virtual debate promoted by Fapesp Agency and The Butantan Channel on Tuesday (14), Covas said that, at this time, projections show that, possibly, early next year, there will still be active transmission with the rate of contagion above one in the population of São Paulo.
The state of São Paulo counted 417 deaths from the new coronavirus in the 24 hours prior to the release of the bulletin published by the state government this afternoon. The number is close to the daily record, recorded on June 23, when 434 died as a result of the virus. As ade, the state has added 18,324 deaths from the new coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic.
The state also counted today 12,000 new cases of covid-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus, a number close to the daily record, which occurred on July 2, which had 12,244 new cases. Thus, the state reached the sum of 386,607 people infected with the disease since the beginning of the pandemic. Of the 645 municipalities in the state, 636 recorded at least one confirmed case of the disease.
