Brazil is the country that has lost the most forest area in the last decade, according to a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), released on Wednesday (22).
Then, the countries that lost the most forest area in the last decade were the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia and Angola.
The data is from the annual "Global Assessment of Forest Resources" report.
According to the document, Brazil has lost 1,500 km² of forest each year in the last decade (2010-2020). Between 1990 and 2000, the estimated loss was 3.78 thousand km² and, between 2000 and 2010, 3.95 thousand km².
In all, 31% of the entire area of the planet is occupied by forests. Europe, including Russia, hosts 25% of this area, followed by South America, 21%, North and Central America, 19%, Africa, 16%, Asia, 15%, and Oceania, 5%, the UN says.
These forests contain 60,000 tree species, 80% of all amphibian species, 75% of bird species and 68% of mammals.
