The double rice and beans resistant to changes of consumption

Despite the changes in the consumption habits of the population in recent years, some things remain the same in the homes of Brazilians. At least those who live in Goiás. Rice and beans still share the same dish, the rice is done every day and the beans are frozen. These are some of the findings from a survey conducted in the State by Embrapa rice and beans, with the support of the UFG (Federal University of Goiás), CREA-GO (Regional Council of engineering and Agronomy) and Camil Alimentos.
The intent of the survey was to find out how to value and increase the consumption of the duo, on the assumption that the habit was being left out. "We''re leaving the wrong premises, vaunted on social networks that consumers are leaving to eat rice and beans at the expense of '' junk food '' and other combinations. It''s not true. There is a greater consumption of sandwiches and other food faster, but the average points to stability in the use of rice and beans in meals, "says Carlos Magri Ferreira, a researcher at Embrapa rice and beans and coordinator of the work.
A total of 291 respondents, 30.9% said eating the same amount of rice in five years ago and 31.1% reported consuming similar portions of beans. The percentages of increase or fall were similar for both grains-about 30% to each side. "The exception is the consumption of the class in this case, there were 58.2% reduction in consumption of rice in the last five years and 50% in the case of beans. The other classes have not shown variation, "says Ferreira.
The per capita consumption of rice per meal in Goiás was estimated at 69.5 g, regardless of income. For the bean, are 25.8 grams. These volumes are equivalent to dry beans. Once cooked, the weight increases.
According to the survey, 75.1% of Goiás, make meals at home. About 60% of the respondents pointed the necessity of eating grains in at least one daily meal. The surprise, says a researcher at Embrapa, came the information that most of those surveyed associate weight gain to the consumption of rice and beans-41.7% consider the cereal the villain, and to 28.1% legumes is to blame.
Much of the hypertensive and diabetic patients consider that the double would be unsuitable for consumption. "We''ve talked with the College of nutrition of UFG and let''s do papers and texts stating that this is wrong. Nutritionists ensures that the preparation of the products can interfere with disease and only for rare cases consumption is not recommended, "says Ferreira.
On the varieties consumed, 88.9% buy polished white rice, 1.6% and 9.4% parbolizado. In the case of beans, 95.8% of respondents consume the carioca, more produced in the country, and 3.6% black.
As regards the option to buy, nothing indicates that the packaging information make a difference to the buyer, but the mark Yes. But, of course, the price is paramount. The metropolitan region of Goiás was chosen as a starting point, but the intention is to promote research in at least eight more capitals and metropolitan areas of the country. "We''re looking for sponsorship," says Ferreira.
