Aluminum differentiators enable creation of innovative packaging for food and beverages

The versatility and the practical advantages of aluminum sheet enable the development of new solutions that enhance the performance, the visual impact and the sustainability of food packaging. The Alufoil Trophy contest 2016 revealed innovations that confirm the endless possibilities of application of aluminum.
The category of General Excellence went to the Refilly package, developed by Finnish group Huhtamaki flexible packaging, for the Italian coffee Illy. It is a cylindrical cartridge pouch, aluminium laminates produced tailored to fit easily in 250 g Tin of Illy coffee. The flexible packaging weighs less than 20 g, is easy to open, keeps intact flavour and aroma and reduces 80% the filling cans.
The creativity of the new 65 ideas entered in the prize can be exemplified with packaging All In One of the Swiss cheese fondue Fondu Emmi. The concept offers easy, quick and clean preparation. Bring the cream cheese ready in container that can be heated in the microwave or traditional oven. After warming up, just keep it warm over a rechaud base. The application of aluminum in semi-rigid packaging and sealing cap made possible a solution that offers convenience to the consumed: preparation easy, quick and clean.
Among the ten winners was also featured the aluminum pouch packaging developed for protein shake EZY Pro 10, manufactured by Ampac. The packaging complies with the requirements to meet the needs of the athletes, who need to combine nutritional complementation safe and practicality. The ultra-light and hermetically sealed package contains only the protein powder. Just add water consumers, through a nozzle of 21 mm in width, and shake before drinking. In addition to lightness, aluminum preserves the consistency of the protein and keeps all the nutritional properties of the drink.
