Packaging industry see retraction of 2.8% in 2016

The packaging industry expects 2.8% retracement in physical production this year, falling less than 4.31 percent recorded in accumulated 2015, according to the Brazilian packaging Association study in partnership with the Ibre/FGV disclosed this Wednesday (24).
The gross volume of production was in R$ 57.3 billion last year, reflecting the economic downturn scenario in Brazil. The biggest setback in production was verified in the wood packaging ( -12.8%), followed by the paper, cardboard and paperboard ( -5.6%).
The retraction must be lower than 2016 2015 because of the currency effect, said economist Salomon Frames, responsible for the study. "The dollar to r $ 4 stimulates exports and inhibits imports, so the packaging sector tends to be indirectly benefited. And the stocks are declining industries, there will be a replacement movement, "he said.
He stressed, however, that these elements may not be sufficient to show growth again until the end of the year. "We can see the first 2017 postponed to positive rates of growth in production of packaging we anticipated for the fourth quarter of 2016," he said.
